Live the Dream...Again

Lots of places use our DeLorean part numbers as identifiers for their "cross-reference" or "make-do" parts, creating confusion in the marketplace. This DMC Improved Part is identical or similar to the original part, but improved in design, material or functionality.

ALERT: Beware of the Delrin sliders sold by others! These will NOT act as a "fuse" and break when forced open, but rather they will forcefully rip out the mounting holes in your engine cover!

When it came time to reproduce the engine cover slider, we spent a lot of time looking at how we could improve it. First, we wanted it to fit better - the factory part never seems to have a good fit with the center spine of the engine cover, often requiring modification that weakens the engine cover or the slider. We made the U-channel on the slider slightly wider and tapered to better fit engine cover.

Many of the originals would, when the engine cover was forced too far up, rip the slider out of the spine as a result of poor fit or not enough material after the mounting holes were drilled. A common feature of earlier attempts to improve this part included an extra set of mounting holes in the slider for just this reason - when the factory holes ripped out, you could use the new slider and make new holes - and for those owners in that situation, we decided to keep the second set of holes.

We thought we wanted the slider to be stronger, to resist breaking - the reason many have been replaced over the years. In fact, our previous slider (inherited from the old DeLorean Motor Center in California) was all metal for just this reason. However, if the slider didn't break,  it would rip out of the engine cover completely causing and expensive repair or outright replacement. For this reason, we chose to go back to plastic construction but improved the material selection to something that would better withstand the underhood environment. After testing and much discussion, we realized that the slider might be able to act as a “fuse”, to protect the engine cover from damage.

We also wanted these improved sliders to be affordable, so If the slider did break you’d only need to replace a $22 part, as opposed to either replacement or repair of the $700 engine cover.
