BRAKE (STOP) LIGHT SWITCH
When you step on the brake pedal, the motion of the pedal arm breaks contact with this electrical switch and illuminates your brake lights. When it fails, your brake lights don't come on anymore - sometimes you find out about this the hard way, sometimes someone just gives you the finger. Other causes for brake light failure can be fuse #18 (later cars) or the glass inline fuse in the driver's footwell on earlier production cars.
