ULTRADRIVE™ SPEEDOMETER ANGLE DRIVE
NEW AND IMPROVED FOR 2025!
This new & improved UltraDrive™, a totally new part redesigned exclusively for Classic DMC by Martin Gutkowski in the United Kingdom, corrects the common failure points and shortcomings of both the original angle drive design - and any reproductions based on it. Assembled at Classic DMC (Texas) of high quality US-made and imported components including an all-new stainless steel housing, precision machined spiral bevel gears, European NBR oil seals and Oilite® bearings.
Designed with tight tolerances within the assembly and a factory-correct 1.125:1 ratio to ensure years of smooth and accurate speedometer operation, the UltraDrive™ is maintenance-free, being fully lubricated and permanently sealed at time of assembly.
With more than 20,000 miles (and counting as of August 13, 2025!) of real-world and bench testing in various configurations, we’re offering an industry-leading unlimited mileage and two-year warranty* against angle drive failure (when used with all supplied components including lower cable, dust shield, and angle drive nut).
Why it's a better part
The original factory angle drive used cross axis helical gears (similar to those pictured below). They are known for being inefficient and prone to failure if overloaded or the lubrication is ever compromised. The advantage is that you can mix and match any two gears of the same module tooth size to make the required ratio, so in 1981 it was the simplest way to make the required 1.125:1 ratio (18/16).
The spiral bevel gears used in the UltraDrive™ like seen below, on the other hand, are designed and manufactured as a pair where the axes cross. They're a significantly better choice in the same footprint and offer several advantages over straight bevel gears, including smoother operation, vibration, higher efficiency, and increased strength and durability.
